The tour begins at the meeting point in Piazza Santa Trinità, by the Column of Justice commissioned by Cosimo de’ Medici. From there, we enter the Sassetti Chapel, starting with a short introduction to the church and an explanation of the role and meaning of patron chapels. We then focus on the frescoes—11 in total—telling the story of Saint Francis of Assisi. Through a symbolic lens, however, we uncover layered meanings: hidden symbols that point to events connected to the Medici family, all the way to the first Medici papacy.
On this tour, I share a unique, original reading of the fresco cycle, based on my research. We end in the Strozzi Chapel, attributed to Ghiberti or even Brunelleschi—a place usually closed to the public. Here, we screen a 19-minute video I produced, drawing connections to other fresco cycles. Finally, we return to the Column of Santa Trinita, where the circle closes and we explain why Cosimo I chose to erect it.
